Garbage disposal smells like sewage: what it means

A disposal that smells like sewage is not the same as food odor or a sulfur water heater. Check the trap, then call (858) 400-4417 for a licensed plumber.

The kitchen smells like a sewer, and it is strongest at the disposal. Food rot in the splash guard is one smell. Sewage is another. A water heater that smells like sulfur is a third. Do not treat all three as a baking-soda job.

Sewage smell versus food smell versus sulfur

Food odor is sour, and it often lives in the rubber baffle. Ice and citrus are the internet’s next step. They do not fix a dry trap or a line that is backing up.

Sewage smell is drain gas. The trap under the disposal is supposed to hold water and block that gas. If the trap is dry, cracked, or pulled, the kitchen gets the line. If the other basin, the dishwasher, or a floor drain also smells, this is not a baffle.

Sulfur at a hot-water tap is a heater and anode conversation, not a disposal conversation. If only cold water at this sink smells, stay at the drain. If every hot tap smells, stop blaming the disposal.

A disposal that will not run is a different page. This one assumes the unit still spins, and the complaint is smell.

Do not pour chemical drain opener through a disposal. It sits in the housing and attacks seals. The contractor you’re matched with then has to work through it.

When the smell is the line, not the unit

If the sink is slow, if the other basin gurgles, or if a toilet nearby burps when the disposal runs, treat it as a drain. South Bay kitchens in National City and Chula Vista often have a disposal on one basin of a double sink. A 1920s bungalow in North Park may have a shallow trap and a long run to the stack. A Mira Mesa ranch may share that kitchen branch with a dishwasher. The same smell can be a dry trap in one house and a packed kitchen line in the next.

City hardness, about 16 grains per gallon or 276 ppm on the city’s published figure, can leave film on the splash guard. Film is not sewage. If you already cleaned the baffle and the smell is still sewer, stop scrubbing.

If the whole house smells, use sewer smell in the house. If sewage is coming up, use sewage backup in the house.

What the contractor you’re matched with may inspect

Plumbing Pro San Diego is a referral service. We match you with independent C-36 licensed plumbing contractors. You hire the plumber directly.

A C-36 license covers supply and the proper disposal of fluid waste, including kitchen drains and the disposal connection. Forced-air heating does not.

Check the license on the Contractors State License Board site. The database is down Sundays 8 p.m. through Mondays 6 a.m. for maintenance.

California requires a contractor license when the aggregate contract price is $1,000 or more. That threshold moved from $500 to $1,000 on January 1, 2026.

On site they typically pull the baffle, check the trap, run the other basin, and decide whether this stays a disposal job or becomes drain cleaning. They may replace a cracked flange or a failed splash guard. They may cable the kitchen line. This page cannot tell you which.

How to request a disposal or drain referral

Have three facts. Whether the unit still runs. Whether other fixtures smell or gurgle. Whether the smell is only at this sink.

Then request a garbage disposal repair referral, or drain cleaning if other fixtures are involved, through Plumbing Pro San Diego. We connect you with an independent licensed plumber who serves your city. You hire them, and you pay them. We do not set prices.

When to call us

Call when the baffle is clean and the kitchen still smells like sewage, or when other drains are in on it. Call us at (858) 400-4417 and we’ll connect you with a licensed plumber.
